The Kalkaska Kiwanis Club recognized Major General Jerry Cannon for his many years of service to our country and community with a Diamond Level Hixson. Family, fellow Kiwanians, friends and special guests honored the charter member of Kiwanis of Kalkaska in a long anticipated surprise dinner. Although the decision to honor Jerry was made over a year earlier, the club had to wait until his return from his latest deployment to Iraq. A photograph was taken after the Diamond Level Hixson presentation featuring all present who are currently or have served their country in a military branch. Those pictured include: (back row, left to right) Brigadier General Jim Anderson, Jerry Gaultier, (front row left to right) Cindy Shipp, Two Star General Jerry Cannon, Brigadier General Mitch LeClaive, Hal Dufford, Dan Hayden, Bill Parsons.

In Memory of Hal Dufford, 1925-2011
Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Friend,
Musher, Kiwanian Extraordinary!

"The harnesses are hung, the sleds put away. Michigan's oldest sled dog musher has gone to heaven with his dogs. Dog sledding was Hal's passion and he loved his Siberian Huskies. He started Cherski Kennels in 1967 and was very well known for breeding champions in the sport.

Hal served his country in World War II as a Marine pilot flying Corsairs. He attended Yale and Iowa State, earning a B.S. in agriculture."

Hal was a founding member of the Kalkaska Kiwanis Club, and served as president, and eventually District 21 Lt. Governor. He was very active as District Leader for area Key Clubs and he loved the many years he spent with the Kalkaska Builders and Key Clubs.....his Kiwanis Kids!

The Kalkaska Chamber of Commerce named Hal Citizen of the Year in 2007. He left a legacy privately and publicly that will long be remembered and cherished.
